Going THERE

DAily prompt#2802

Daily writing prompt
Which languages do you speak and how did that impact your life?

Ghetto English/ Modern English and moderate to some fluent Spanish.

I was born in the north eastern United States, in the early 70’s. English was quite different back then. At least the way we commonly used English. Schooling was quite strict with grammar, pronunciation. There was no snobbery about it, we just had to get good grades in English (reading, writing and pronunciation) or we were not promoted to the next grade.

Well, one would REALLY NEVER know it by the way I speak now! I hear myself pop out a ‘No Diggity!’ or ‘Aint nobody got time for that’ or i’m just chillin’ OR “right thurr” , “Im down.” THEN I break out laughing, as if the voice I heard say those words was not myself.

And then I laugh some more. Cussing, I hear myself throwing out cuss words. When did I begin cussing so much? Substituting harsh language? I think right around 2019.

2019 NWO has been heavy with far reaching pangs, but I refuse to be taken down. Health issues, life, loss… ahhh!

So this particular writing prompt in particular is FREAKING FABULOUS for me, because it is prompting me to ‘go there’. —–> That *place* where flaws, faults, sins, immaturity, bla bla bla is… all collected together into some inexplicable giant, scary, blob that I only peek at *when necessary*! Shoulder shrug. Ok, I need to challenge myself to ‘do better’ with my language, my speech… my thoughts. English CAN BE really lovely. Suppose today is the day. :). Allllright……

Spanish. Spanish is my second language. I speak moderate /semi fluent Spanish. Although I did live in Mexico for a few years, I do believe that the actual ‘learning’ the language came by ‘listening’. The telenovelas (soap operas) were on for the teenagers sometimes and Luis Miguel, Juan Gabriel, Bronco, Manna or Spanish church music always seemed to be playing. At 12 noon “Ave Maria” always played. Family parties, juegos de Futobol, listening to the kids joke and people at the mercado negotiate was sweet, and at one point I finally came to understand the words and phrases. I got it! They couldn’t get away with anything anymore! hehe GOL!

How am I impacted?

When I lived in Mexico I was able to teach people at church English. That was fun, and valuable.

Upon writing this I see that I need to challenge myself to get my speech more in order so that my thoughts will be as well. Reading higher level books, exposing myself to higher level media will help.

Speaking and understanding Spanish opens up literally* a whole new world for me. I can now communicate somewhat with many people that I before could not across the planet.

Que milagro!

You are a blessing, I hope that this blesses you. Thank you for reading! ❤

Numbers 6:24-26

24 “‘“The Lord bless you
    and keep you;
25 the Lord make his face shine on you
    and be gracious to you;
26 the Lord turn his face toward you
    and give you peace.”’

and

“So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it’ Isaiah 55:11

Some questions I am pondering:

1)How is today’s English education impacting our language… our thinking, and our communicating?

2)Are we willing to examine the English of our ancestors, and to see what actually works, what is good, better, best? And to implement that for ourselves as well as our children?

3)Are we up for learning a second language if we have not already? #fun
